Jackson grew up in Eau Claire, WI, which is about three hours northwest of Madison. He was in 9th grade when he had his first class focusing on genetics, and he was immediately hooked. 5 years later, he got the pleasure of working in Ahna Skop's research lab, which has a primary focus on genetics. He is currently enrolled at UW-Madison seeking a degree in Biology and Global Health. He hopes to be able to go to graduate school. Outside of academia, he loves hanging out with friends, meeting new people, playing basketball, and trying new things.

I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and as a child, I would spend a lot of my time outside with my younger sister dissecting bugs and ‘investigating’ what grew in my mom’s garden. My love for science really started there, along with the time I got researching on the computer each day. In high school, I realized my curiosity in the sciences often ventured beyond what I learned in class. When it came time to choose what I wanted to do in college, I was torn between the languages and Biology, but eventually, I chose to double major in Genetics and Spanish because I wanted to learn more about the intricacies of genes and the cause and effect of many diseases and disorders, in addition to learning Spanish on a more global level. When I’m not working in lab, I’m one of the class chairs for my scholarship cohort (Mercile J. Lee Scholars Program) and president of ReWear It Wisconsin, a fashion sustainability organization, in addition to crocheting, making jewelry, and sewing in my free time.

Applying to Our Lab
Undergraduate applicants
Our lab prefers undergraduates to start in our lab in their sophomore year. We are interested in students who would like to spend the rest of their college career doing independent research in our lab each semester. Research can be conducted for credits during fall and spring. Work study students are also encouraged to apply. We always need students to help out around the lab. We can pay you to learn! To apply send a resume and your interests to Ahna Skop.
